The East European Ovcharka has sturdy, muscular, slightly elongated body with a solid bone structure.
Temperament
South Russian Ovcharkas are two dogs in one. They have "two faces" to show to the world. This is caused by the fact that they divide the world in two parts: "mine" and "not mine". They are independent, intelligent, dominant and loyal dogs. They can be very affectionate but all in their own time they have little "will to please", they will be your companion but not ones that will do everything you ask of them. this breed is selected for its independent guarding and defense abilities. The South Russian Ovcharka combines the ability of inborn distrust and defense against strangers with high sinsitiveness and an obvious talent for situation control. A South Russian Ovcharka will accept the fact that a dominant dog or human being controls a situation. When he spots insecurity, he will claim leadership.
The South Russian Ovcharka can be educated to be a good companions. Their guarding instincts can be increased or decreased. For a South Russian Ovcharka puppy it is very important to be a part of the family and he needs to go through a great deal of social experiences. The puppy needs to look up to you as his leader. Obedience training is not a luxury but a necessity. Working together makes a good bond between South Russian Ovcharka and owner and will make the South Russian Ovcharka a tolerant family member towards "his" adults, children and animals. South Russian Ovcharka are very distrusting towards strangers but once accepted, they can be very charming hosts, who like to be chucked and caressed.
